You can’t get cheap tickets for travel through about January 5th…(I work at a major airline call center in Houston…believe me…can’t be done at this point…)
The last two weeks of November…The last two weeks of December, and the 1st week of January are very “peak” travel times…also…the last two weeks of February…the week before, during, and after Easter…the 1st week of June…the week before, during and after the 4th of July…
These are the times of the year it is very difficult to get a cheap ticket at the last minute…if you get lucky…and buy a ticket on the day the fares drop for those time periods (and most low fares for those times sell out in one day) then whatever you do…don’t change you flight plan…they ream you if you change your outbound flight at the last minute…and you’ll always get hit with a $100.00 change fee…
If you want to fly cheap for the holidays…you have to buy your tickets about six months in advance…and even then, you might not be able to…peak times are expensive because the airline’s know that the people are willing to pay higher prices to see their families, and they can gouge the business travelers…

As a former airline employee I highly recommend always checking directly with the airlines website. They may have some last minute deals But this is peak travel time and even if you booked way in advance fares were pretty high because the airlines know they can fill the planes and make money. DO NOT use travelocity or Expedia, they have the rudest incompetent customer service reps (most of their call centers are in India) and won’t help you when your in a bind. Their websites can also be very deceiving and show you a great price and then you get to the purchase page and the fare is all of a sudden no longer available. Those websites are for the most part accessing the airlines direct availability anyways.
You may score some cheap seats with priceline, but be aware as someone else said you have to give your credit card ahead of time before you even know what you are getting.

Onetime.com compares all the travel sites listed.
the cheapest price i found direct was $784 leaving the 29 and returning the 28.(on travelocity.com)
try flying to buffalo it will save you time and money.it only $344 leaving the 31 returning 30 from IAH to BUF(on cheaptickets.com) and $16 will get you from buf to downtown toronto less than a taxi from the airport witch is like $50(on greyhound.com)
